Sekolah lulus dengan nilai tertinggi itu kebanggan banyak orang. Kuliah lulus dengan bergelimang nilai A, cum laude, itu harapan banyak orang, terutama orang tua yang biasanya merasa lebih bangga ketimbang sang anak yang lulus.

Bisa sekolah, bisa lolos kuliah, ya sudah seharusnya berusaha keras agar mendapat nilai tinggi karena itulah ukuran keberhasilan akademis. Mereka yang lulus dengan nilai tinggi memiliki kecakapan akademis yang tinggi pula. Dan itu menjadi bekal yang baik untuk jenjang akademis berikutnya, dari SD, SMP, SMA, S1, ke S2 dan lalu ke S3.

Kecakapan akademis juga menjadi bekal yang bagus juga saat lulus, untuk mencari kerja. Bagaimana pun juga, yang IP (Indeks Prestasinya) lebih tinggi akan lebih menarik perhatian.

Namun, saat memasuki dunia bekerja, kita semua tahu, kecakapan akademis bukan satu-satunya bekal menghadapi dunia kerja. Justru kecakapan non-akademis yang lebih banyak menentukan masa depan, terutama di bidang-bidang yang membutuhkan kecakapan-kecakapan yang tidak diajarkan di dunia akademis.

Maka, ketika saya memberikan pembekalan kepada calon wisudawan D3 dan S1 Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Senin 20 Mei 2013, di depan 1.600 an mahasiswa yang akan diwisuda, saya mengatakan:

“Yang besok diwisuda, dan akan segera menghadapi tantangan berikutnya di dunia kerja, ada bekal yang tak kalah pentingnya dari IP, yakni kecakapan non-akademis. Kita tidak akan bisa mengubah IP kita. Itu sudah tercetak. Itu hasil kuliah kita. Yang IP nya 4 atau mendekati 4, selamat! Yang IP nya mentok di angka terendah untuk lulus, selamat juga, bersyukurlah masih bisa lulus. Sekarang lupakan semua itu.

Di depan ada tantangan hidup, tantangan kerja, yang membutuhkan kombinasi kecakapan akademis dan non-akademis. Bahkan, seringkali, kecakapan non-akademis lebih banyak menentukan. Kecakapan non-akademis inilah yang wajib diasah.”

Banyak kecakapan non-akademis yang menentukan keberhasilan kita menghadapi hidup dan dunia kerja. Tapi saya hanya menyampaikan empat hal.

Pertama: Apapun yang kita kerjakan dengan senang hati saat sekolah/kuliah, tapi tak terkait dengan nilai kuliah. Bisa jadi itu hobi kita.

Saya misalnya, saat SMA dan kuliah, hobi membaca buku dan majalah ilmiah populer, sekaligus suka menulis. Saya juga hobi menggambar. Semua itu tak ada kaitannya dengan kuliah saya di Teknik Nuklir UGM. Namun hobi itu bisa membantu saya membiayai kuliah. Setiap selesai kuliah, jika topik itu saya anggap menarik untuk publik, saya menuliskannya menjadi artikel ilmiah populer, dan saya kirim ke koran, terutama koran Wawasan dan Suara Merdeka di Semarang. Honornya lumayan, karena saya bisa menulis setiap pekan.

Dan yang penting, kecakapan menulis terasah!

Kecakapan menulis ini membuat saya lebih mudah menulis skripsi, dan saat lulus mencari kerja membuat surat lamaran yang tidak standar surat lamaran. Bahkan saya lampirkan beberapa kliping tulisan itu di surat lamaran. Ini yang membuat saya selalu dipanggil untuk wawancara kerja, meski pada tahun1990 tidak ada perusahaan swasta yang mencari lulusan Teknik Nuklir.

Kecakapan menulis itulah yang kemudian membuka saya untuk mengawali kerja di jurnalistik selama lima tahun, mulai dari koran Bisnis Indonesia, majalah Prospek dan terakhir di majalah SWA. Bahkan saat kemudian  menjadi eksekutif di Detik.com dan terjun ke dunia usaha, menjadi pengusaha di bidang digital, kecakapan menulis tetap berperan besar.

Jadi, jangan remehkan hobi apapun yang kita tekuni saat sekolah dan kuliah. Itu bekal kecakapan non-akademis yang penting menghadapi kehidupan pasca kuliah akademis.

Kedua: Kecakapan Bertarung.

Eh bertarung? Iya, bertarung. Berkelahi. Bisa bertarung ide atau fisik.

Mereka yang biasa adu gagasan saat berorganisasi di sekolah, biasanya mampu menyampaikan gagasannya dengan baik, dan punya mental untuk menang. Banyak organisasi yang bisa jadi ajang mengasah ini, bisa via OSIS, kelompok pecinta alam, atau kelompok sains saat SMP/SMA bisa via berbagai organisasi yang tumbuh subur di kampus atau bahkan di luar kampus.

Bisa juga via olahraga. Lomba-lomba di berbagai jenis olahraga itu mengajarkan mental juara. Saya kebetulan dari SMA hingga kuliah ikut karate dan sempat beberapa kali jadi juara di pertandingan antar kampus se Jateng-Yogya, jadi tahu bahwa sebagus apapun kemampuan teknik karate kita, jika ngeper menghadapi lawan, ya kita akan kalah. Bahkan jika kita percaya diri, lawan yang kempuan teknisnya lebih bagus pun bisa kita taklukkan.

Kecakapan bertarung itu membuat kita punya mental menang.

Tiga: Kecakapan Bertahan Hidup

Beberapa teman sekolah dan kuliah saya sebagian adalah anak-anak orang tak mampu, yang kadang terlambat membayar SPP atau tak mampu beli buku, namun mereka tetap sekolah/kuliah dengan semangat tinggi. Dan mereka bisa lulus dengan nilai baik. Saat kerja pun prestasinya menonjol dan karirnya bagus.

Bahkan untuk bertahan hidup dan bisa tetap kuliah, mereka mencari uang dengan berbagai cara, termasuk jualan koran atau bubur kacang ijo di kampus, beberapa yang kreatif jualan kaos sablon.

Saya termasuk yang terlatih sejak dini karena begitu lulus SMA dan diterima di Teknik Nuklir UGM, langsung minta izin orang tua untuk hidup mandiri, tak perlu dikirimi uang bulanan untuk bayar kos dan hidup jauh dari orang tua. Ini mengajarkan saya untuk mengalami hidup dalam kondisi terburuk – tak punya uang sama sekali tapi harus survive – dan semangat untuk mandiri.

Syukurlah saya punya orang tua yang mengajarkan mandiri, bahkan sejak SMP, dengan membantu bisnis orang tua.  Setiap Jum’at, bersama pegawai lainnya, saya dapat honor dari berapa baju yang saya seterika, berapa baju yang saya pasangi kancing, dan seterusnya dari toko jahit orang tua. Uang itulah yang disebut uang jajan. Hasil keringat sendiri.

Mereka yang cakap menghadapi hidup lebih awal, tanpa sadar membangun daya tahan sekaligus daya hidup yang lebih tinggi. Beberapa teman yang seperti ini, setelah lulus kuliah, banyak yang menjadi pengusaha, meski sebagian mengawali sebagai karyawan.

Saya senang bisa mengetahui beberapa calon wisudawan UGM yang sejak kuliah pun menyalurkan hobinya, termasuk membuat game online, dan bercita-cita jadi pengusaha begitu lulus (padahal sesungguhnya mereka sudah jadi pengusaha saat kuliah).

Keempat: Attitude atau sikap hidup.

Bagaimana sikap hidup kita menghadapi sesuatu (orang lain, peristiwa, gagasan, bahkan diri sendiri) itu menantukan jalan kita ke depan. Sikap, bukan kecakapan, yang akan menentukan tingginya posisi kita.

Mereka yang bersikap positif biasanya hidupnya lebih mudah, termasuk lebih mudah bekerjasama dengan orang lain, lebih mudah mengelola anak buah, lebih mudah bekerja dengan atasan.

Sikap positif ini bukan hanya pada orang lain, peristiwa atau gagasan saja, tetapi bahkan pada diri sendiri.  Kadang, ada saja yang nggak percaya diri, merasa kurang ini kurang itu yang berujung minder. Merasa kurang untuk kemudian memperbaiki diri itu wajar, tapi kalau berujung minder itu artinya sikap hidupnya belum positif.

Empat hal di atas, jika dilatih sejak kecil, akan menjadi teman baik kecakapan akademis memasuki era pasca kuliah menghadapi dunia non akademis.

Namun, bagi yang belum punya, kecakapan tersebut juga bisa dilatih saat kerja.

Bagi saya, keempat hal di atas bisa menjadi modal untuk memasuki dunia wirausaha. Maka saya berharap, semakin banyak lulusan UGM yang sejak kuliah sudah punya bekal tersebut, agar kelak jadi pengusaha. Apalagi saat ini, di era Internet, peluang untuk menjadi pengusaha, terutama yang berbasis IT/Internet, terbuka luas.
